The mission of the BETHEL LITERARY INITIATIVE (BETHLIN) is “To discover and boost the development of gifted Christian writers and enhance the Christian literary and publishing landscape in Nigeria and Africa.” Also within the purview of BETHLIN is a campaign to inculcate the reading culture in Nigerian and other African Christians.

FACETS OF THE INITIATIVE

The facets of BETHLIN, in the order in which we plan to introduce them, are as follows:

1.                  Bethel Writing Challenge

2.                  Bethel Writers Network

3.                  Bethel Digest

4.                  Bethel Reading Campaign

5.                  Bethel Writing Course

6.                  Bethel Books

THE LAUNCH AND CORE OF THE INITIATIVE

As noted, it is our plan to sequentially introduce the different facets of BETHLIN. The funds that we presently seek are for making foundational preparations (including the setting up of an effective website that will serve as an Internet portal for all the facets of the initiative) and to launch the first facet of the initiative, the Bethel Writing Challenge.

Bethel Writing Challenge: Writing contests are some of the most effective means of motivating and discovering gifted writers, and this is the strategic purpose of the Bethel Writing Challenge. It will constitute a wakeup call of sorts to Nigerian Christian writers (among whom it would be initiated), and will be used to publically announce and set the activities of BETHLIN in motion. Entries will be invited in three categories, namely non-fiction, fiction (short story) and poetry, and cash prizes will be advertised and awarded to winners. The entries and entrants of the Bethel Writing Challenge will constitute essential inputs for realizing what might be considered as the core facet of BETHLIN—the Bethel Digest.

Bethel Digest: The Bethel Digest is envisioned as a handy Christian magazine—essentially a Christian version of the word-famous Reader’s Digest—and will be published in both physical and online formats. The magazine will basically feature winning and other selected entries of the article-length Bethel Writing Challenge, edited and polished as necessary to meet the very high standards envisioned for the publication. The publication of Bethel Digest will commence quarterly. As the popularity and circulation grows, the frequency will be increased to bi-monthly and then monthly. By then, article contribution from Nigerian and other African Christian writers, who will be fully awake, will be solicited through more traditional avenues.

IN CHRIST WE TRUST

BETHLIN is indeed a noble cause, and space constraint has meant that we can only make a concise presentation here (the full proposal is available). Nevertheless, as we rise up to the task, our trust is in the One who has given us the vision and encouraged us to pursue it. It is our expectation that, through the full range of its activities, BETHLIN would be nurtured into a beacon of Christian writing and publishing in Nigeria and Africa. May the Lord richly bless you as you join hands with us in this venture.

ABOUT THE INITIATOR

The Initiator of the Bethel Literary Initiative, David Olagoke Olawoyin, is a gifted and experienced Christian writer. He is a graduate of The National Bible College, United Kingdom and the writer of the online publication The Kingdom Herald. He is also the founder and leader of the active Facebook group Kingdom Citizens Congregation, and the author of the book We Shall Reign, an exceptionally reviewed work that presents a groundbreaking perspective of the future of our world in the context of the promised millennial kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ. His second book, The Evolution of Eternity, which is a more comprehensive exposition of the promised Millennium, is awaiting publication.

Olawoyin’s vision for the establishment of Bethel Literary Initiative was inspired by the winding and difficult route he had to follow in learning the ropes of the literary and publishing world and developing his writing ministry. This was significantly due to the absence of appropriate facilities, institutions and programmes specially tailored for aspiring and practising Christian writers in Nigeria. He thus had to liaise with and heavily depend upon foreign facilities and personalities. This has placed on him the burden of making things easier for aspiring and practising Christian writers in Nigeria and all Africa. A hearing challenge that he has had to contend with has made him more dedicated to the ministry of the written word. He, however, firmly believes and confesses his healing by the stripes of our Lord Jesus (1 Peter 2:24), and definitely looks forward to putting the challenge behind him.

Before his call to Christian writing, Olawoyin obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Lagos, Nigeria and a post-graduate certificate (Engineering) from the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, United Kingdom. He presently also works as a freelance editor (Engineering and Technology) with Cactus Communications, Mumbai, India – an experience that has further equipped him to launch the Bethel Literary Initiative.

Good Day Sir. I believe all is well with you and the family. You may recall the proposal of the Christian literary initiative that I shared with you the other day. The Lord has moved on me lately to really do something about it. You may be getting a message from “Faithlauncher” about this. I am really trusting for your moral support. Thank you and God bless you.
